A colorful Smile
Seven Questions for Roselyne Charles

Since when have you been a painter?

Although I grew up amongst musicians, I started to draw and later paint at a very early age. It has become my way of expressing myself and a means to escape. To the great despair of my father, I spent hours reading about and admiring the art of the great masters of the classic times.

What brought you to paint?

There is no special reason why I started to paint. I developed my painting skills gradually over the years. Although my career as an artist was temporarily delayed by a career as a model.

Which techniques do you use?

My materials are limited to canvas and paint. I use acrylic paint, gouache, or oil paint, depending on the kind of painting I am making, and the effect I want to create. I use brushes and my fingers, sometimes a knife or sponge, or other homemade materials to apply the paint on the canvas. One of my favorite special techniques is the use of ice cubes to create a relief effect.

What are the different themes of your exhibition?

"Sonrisa des Colores" - A Colorful Smile - describes the overall tone of my work.
Colors are very important, as they allow me to express joy and love in any painting or theme I work with.
A smile to me is the first external expression of love and happiness.
My paintings are not meant to be humorous, however drawing caricature is a style I also practice.
With a colorful smile I celebrate the force of nature, its majesty and its delicacy. I celebrate the body in my nude paintings, which symbolizes primal expression of reality and functions as a window to how you comprehend the world.

What does spirituality mean to you?

I was raised by my family to believe in spirituality as a fact of life.
In my personal experience, spirituality means the suffering of life. The loss of a dear one, death, and misery in Latin America. By expressing this I hope to help others in their suffering. I have made it my mission, also in the role of Consul General of Colombia, to help those in need.
To do this I have had to reflect and search my own soul, with the help of Christ, and open myself to Buddhism and other wise men of India.

What is your next project after this exhibition?

I have received several proposals for following exhibitions in Guyana, Trinidad and an invitation to participate at a cultural festival in Colombia.

What is the message you convey in your paintings?

Experience spiritual beauty in nature and the beings that surround us. This is not easy as one is taught to use sensibility rather then sensitivity. Being sensible and critical seem to have become a sign of intelligence. One is inclined to search for fault in others, rather then self examination. Soul searching allows you to discover your own faults and correct these, so that you can put your vision of the world into better perspective.
